Choosing A Storage Facility

By

Most of us eventually reach some point in our lives when procuring a storage unit becomes necessary for one of a number of reasons. Perhaps you're moving to a smaller house or apartment and don't want to get rid of your extra stuff that won't fit. Or maybe you inherited a lot of furniture from a relative but are not really sure what to do with it yet.

However you come to the conclusion to rent a storage space, there are some ways to save money. Also, keep in mind that many temporary storage needs end up being for a much longer duration of time than what people originally imagine, so that $50 or $150 monthly storage fee can really add up over time.

First of all, if you live in a larger city you can almost always save bundles of money if you're willing to travel just a tad farther away from the beaten path. Case in point: I had just moved back to Dallas and didn't have room for all of my household stuff while living in a temporary situation until I found a permanent one. I decided that I required a 10 x 15 foot storage unit.

I went online and compared prices of the various storage companies and individual facilities.

I discovered that if I chose the storage facility just off the freeway by my friends' place where I was staying it would cost $160 per month, whereas less than ten miles in the other direction, away from the freeway I found another storage facility of the same brand and size that was only $90 per month.

Another storage facility even more centrally located wanted $180 for the same size storage space. The moral of the story is do your homework. I, like many of my friends, did not plan on having to rent a storage space for as log as it ended up being. Over the extra year I saved at least $840 by looking deeper into the situation and not going with the first most obvious place I found.
