Do You Really Need Furniture Storage?

By

Many people come to a point in their lives when it seems necessary to get a furniture storage space because they inherit a lot of furniture, have recently moved and need a place to store things because they've moved to a smaller home, or perhaps because they buy new living room furniture and need a place to put their perfectly good but somewhat older living room furniture.

Yet before you decide to spend money on a storage space, perhaps you should consider some alternatives that are better for your pocketbook, others who could use the furniture and sustainability in general.

Depending on where you live you can easily spend more than $100 each month for a storage space as small as 100 square feet. This quickly adds up to potentially thousands of dollars each year, especially when you consider the cost of driving to and from the unit, a moving truck for the original and end trip to and from the storage unit.

Rather than spend that kind of money on a furniture storage unit, why not take the time to find a new home for you extra furniture? Let's face it, even the least pack rat-esque people have way too much stuff! Consumerism makes disposable goods that we just can't seem to get enough of. Add the idea that we need the latest living room fashions and before you know it you've got too much furniture to go long with the excessive amounts of plastic.

Go through what you have and sort things into different groups, such as 'donate', 'throw away', 'keep' and, if you must, 'storage'. This can really help

you see what all you have as well as figure out what to do with it.

Many people are surprised to discover just how much of the stuff they own is really unwanted and unneeded. Once you get your piles all sorted it's time to contact the furniture and / or general goods donation service of your choice and /or place some ads online or in the local newspaper.

There is always someone who would like to own what it is that you might not wish to have any longer. Take a look at http://craigslist.com. This is an excellent resource for finding new homes for your unwanted stuff. Choose your location, place your ad and then sit back and see what responses you receive.

Alternatively or in addition to placing some free ads, you may wish to put your items up for sale on an auction website. This is the best way to fetch as much money as possible for your really nice furniture and other items that you may be reluctant to part with.
